the good news is we found out the thieves didn't take the hard drive, but rather RAM. the sad part is, we've already sent out all the letters informing patients that their info, including the SSN may have been compromised. all of that work, and it turns out that their info is safe. it's a little lame that we didn't find this out sooner [as in taking a much more detailed look through the tower that was violated] and it's also a downer that patients are going to freak [not all, just some] when it's all for almost nothing. technically, when anyone unauthorized enters the office and is near the important info, then it's considered "compromised." oh sigh...if only we hadn't been so flustered and had taken just a longer moment to dig around the open tower... oh well, better safe, than sorry.
